Artistic Philosophy

A dedicated pursuit of the art of sculpture.

Soman Jose is a Keralam-based sculptor, thinker, and the founder of Artilora Atelier for Sculpture. His artistic journey is deeply rooted in a profound connection with nature, particularly the ancient, organic, and expressive forms of aerial roots.

Rather than simply shaping wood, Soman approaches each piece with a deep respect for its inherent character, history, memory, and vital spirit. Through patience, silence, and careful observation, he allows the natural form of the wood to reveal possibilities that may already be waiting within it.

His sculptures seek to transform stillness into emotion, roots into stories, and natural forms into living expressions—works that appear to breathe, resonate, and hold a presence of their own. Each sculpture becomes an exploration of the relationship between nature, memory, human emotion, and the unseen forces that quietly connect them.

For Soman, sculpture is not merely the making of an object. It is a slow process of discovery—a dialogue between the artist and the material, where time, instinct, imagination, and the spirit of the wood come together.

He does not impose a finished idea upon the material. Instead, he listens, observes, and responds, allowing the wood to participate in the creative journey.

The sculpture is not simply created. It is discovered, awakened, and given a voice.

At the heart of Soman’s practice is a simple belief:

‘The wood already carries a story. The sculptor’s task is to reveal it.’
Reflections on Stillness & Listening
“Depth is not absence of light, but the presence of stillness so deep that sound turns to stone and thoughts turn to prayer.”
“Before the hand moves, the soul prepares.”

Observation, patience, and intuitive foresight guide this phase, allowing the form to reveal its own possibilities before the hand intervenes.

Artilora is the name. Arty is affection.

The Affectionate Heart of the Atelier

Arty is the affectionate way Artilora is addressed within the atelier and its creative community. It is not a separate identity, nor a pseudonym or nickname for Soman Jose. Soman Jose is the sculptor and thinker who founded Artilora; Arty expresses the affection with which that creative world is held.

Within the atelier, Arty expresses belonging: affection between people, respect between generations, and a shared sensitivity towards creation.

For Artilora, creation begins before the hand touches the material. A thought can become a gesture, a gesture a form, and a form a presence.

Sculpturization describes this sculptural way of experiencing life: the movement of thought, feeling, touch, and imagination towards form. It expresses a philosophy of creation, rather than the completion of a physical sculpture.
